Dickens wiped his brow as they descended the hill for the railway station. ‘You made me sweat, never mind them. Torturs of the Impostion, an’ I’m a witness for the persecution.’

‘Inquisition, my foot —’ Jones was more than familiar with Mrs Gamp’s vagaries of expression — ‘anyway, I wasn’t going to be messed about by a man who’s made his fortune in drugs. “We have more than enough” — so he does, and more than he deserves.’

‘Not a murderer, though.’

‘Not in his state of health, nor Li Shen — and I do understand why he lied, except that we might have got the information sooner. But we got some things clear. Mattinson, for example, is he any more likely than Fullerton to have murdered Mornay for his inheritance? He’s another that has more than enough.’

‘True, my Torquemada, not but what I’d like to see you in your present mood, turn the screws on him.’

‘Very funny, but I am going to ask him about that will — I had a thought that Mornay might have left it at the bank rather than at Pole Court — and we could look at all the other letters he may not have answered, like Jane Spencer’s.’
