Chapter 24

Ziggy practically bounced with elation. His enemy was contained, and Emilia had been waiting for him to come back and take her home just as he’d hoped. She was full of despair. She’d discovered that her boyfriend had made a sex tape of them and posted it to a revenge porn website when they broke up. Users on the site had rated her sexual prowess as poor—attractive but unenthusiastic was the most common comment. She’d repeated this part to Ziggy several times.

“I lost my job,” she said. “I loved my job.”

He led her deeper into the tunnel, away from cameras and prying eyes. “Can you get another one?”

“I was a preschool teacher,” she said. “This is a permanent black mark.”

“Maybe the next employer won’t notice. It’s not like everyone researches candidates on the Internet.”

“They do! Of course they do!” She wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand. “I love the children, and I didn’t even get a chance to say good-bye.”

Why did all of them think that saying good-bye somehow made things all right? It didn’t change anything. Life rolled along whether you said good-bye or not. “The children probably won’t notice.”

She looked stricken. “They’ll notice. Of course they will. They need me. I spend more time with them than their parents do.”

Lucky kids, being able to get away from their parents like that. “The school will hire someone else. The children will be fine. In a few months, they probably won’t even remember you.”

“I let them down.” She sniffed and stared at the track. “Nobody will remember me. Except maybe you.”

“I have a bad memory.” He’d remember her. Emilia with the red shirt that matched the color of her lipstick.

“Thanks.” She tottered to a halt. The drugs were kicking in. Her eyes overflowed with tears, and she grabbed onto his arm like a drowning man to a life preserver.

“Put on some lipstick,” he said. “You’ll feel better if you look better.”

“Attractive, but unenthusiastic.” She sighed, but she got out her lipstick and smoothed it across her too-thin lips.

The smell bloomed in the tunnel. His excitement grew with each breath. It had been such a long time since Sandra. “What does unenthusiastic mean?”

“Bellows like a cow,” she replied. “According to anonymous73.”

Light shone against her lips. Her hair ran down her back like a golden river. A woman who looked like that could bellow all she wanted. “Nothing wrong with cows.”

“What will I tell my father?” she asked. “Why I got fired?”

“You could tell him the truth. He might already know if he has Internet.”

Her eyes widened. “He might have seen it.”

“You said that someone tagged it on your Facebook page,” he said. She’d said no such thing.

“I did?” She reached out a white hand to touch the wall.

“All your friends know by now.”

“I can’t face them. I can’t go back to Indianapolis. I’d rather die.”

He didn’t say anything.

“Blake will never let up,” she said. “He still has the tape. He can post it anywhere.”

“Lots of sites to choose from.
