Nastasya jumped out of the sled, stood, and clenched her hands at her sides. A storm of anger stewed inside of Nastasya as Jahid stood beside her, four wolves growling and chomping at the metal walls that caged them in like prisoners. Nastasya clenched her fists, the familiar fog descending over her vision.

No! We were on our way. This can’t be the end.

Jahid’s voice tugged at the edges of her consciousness, pulling her back from the edge of her madness. “Just a little…” Nastasya saw Jahid’s lips move, saw his arms flail, and watched as the wolves calmed and their paws glowed with power. With a flick of Jahid’s wrist, the Lightning wolves released their energy, causing a deafening crack and a searing white light to erupt inside the cage.

Nastasya shielded her eyes. Surely that would break them free. When she looked around at the iron-clad enclosure, tears welled in her eyes. No, no, no! Was there no way out of this trap?

“Can you…?” Nastasya glanced around, then out the small window, and dropped her voice to a whisper. “I don’t know. Can you control those Wind horses like you do the wolves?”

Shaking his head, Jahid said, “No elemental magic can combat Order. Only Chaos is its rival.”

Although Nastasya had thought it could not have gone more wrong, she saw the reinforced, iron-clad walls on every side of them, and her stomach plummeted through the floor. How were they supposed to escape from something so… seemingly indestructible?

A thick groove near the bottom caught her attention. Nastasya traced it with her fingers.

“It’s no use,” Jahid whispered to her. “These walls are impregnable.”

“This is how you were captured before?”

“When they’re ready to transport us, they’ll slide the bottom in and latch it on the outside,” Jahid answered before she could even ask the question. He’d lived this nightmare before, and Nastasya wondered how he kept his cool when every advance they had made was about to be for nothing.

“What does that even mean?” Nastasya asked, already frustrated that she didn’t know more about the mainland and the magic there. It wasn’t different than the magic back home, and it frustrated her that no one taught her anything about it. “There has to be a way out. We just have to figure out how to topple this thing first.”

Jahid shook his head.

Nastasya glanced from him to the cold, metal walls that caged them in, and she closed her eyes, focusing on everything she had endured the past few days. She hadn’t made it this far to give up now, not when they were so close to the Ice Lands and what might be all the answers to every question in her head. As a single tear streamed down her cheek, Nastasya opened her glassy eyes.

Jahid nodded. He walked to the far barred window and toward the Order priests who were dismounting their Wind steeds. The horses’ brilliant manes flew behind them in the sudden wind, and they looked so beautiful had they not just helped ensure Nastasya’s capture.
