I rode into Hell on earth. Bruges was already going up in flames, as our men ran wild in the streets, hurling torches and flaming javelins onto the roofs. Smoke billowed from upper storey windows, yellow sparks danced in the night air.

People came staggering out, coughing and gasping. It was that, suffocate, or burn. The Flemish citizens were spared. No, the Matins of Bruges was a very specific kind of massacre.

Amid the noise and chaos, I quickly lost touch with my men. Pulled about by the surging crowds, terrified citizens and brawling soldiers. I plunged on, buffeted by the swirling sea of bodies.

After a time I fell in with a band of Flemings. They were led by my old friend, Jan Breydel. Much as I despised the man, there was safety in his company.

“Come, Spaniard,” he cried, seizing my arm. “Join us in a little sport!”

Breydel and his men had a purpose in mind, beyond mere plunder. They went from house to house, hunting for Frenchmen. At last they found the home of a wealthy French merchant. Let me describe what followed.
