Today, Cisalpine Gaul would be roughly northern Italy. Here the Romans took their revenge on the Celts for attacking them back in the days of Brennus.

So far so good for the Romans. The trouble was that the Celts of Gaul – also known simply as the Gauls – still lived freely over most of what is now France and Belgium.

This large area was known as ‘Long-haired Gaul’, so called because the Romans reckoned the Gauls there needed a haircut. Unless the Long-haired Gauls could be conquered, they would always be a threat to Roman territory.
