Harius's head throbbed as he knelt on the ground in his vision of the cave. He had spent the last couple of hours staring at the wall, straining his eyes to try and uncover a pattern within the jumbled mess of words. He picked up short phrases like the good of, man's need for, and the good man. He caught words like peace and coming and order and will. But his efforts were for naught, as the text only scrambled faster than it did during previous visits.
Rubbing his eyes, he recalled the passage of ancient scripture Jesrem had read to him the night before: Through humility and prayer shall men know all things. Harius looked at the wall again and wondered if he was going about this the wrong way. The harder he tried to think, the faster the writing changed. Perhaps the solution was to seek the Divinesâ help and not rely solely on his own ability.
Harius rested his hands over his knees and closed his eyes to start the process of prayer. He inhaled and exhaled, breathing in the odorless air around him as he expelled his frustrations through his nostrils. With each passing second, he felt a little calmer as his mind settled into a state of tranquility. Once relaxed, he opened his eyes to look back at the wall.
His jaw dropped upon finding the wall completely void of writing. There were no shifting words. No jumbled phrases. It had all completely disappeared. Frustration took hold of him once more as he pressed his hand against the smooth granite to see if something would appear.
Suddenly, an image formed within the wall as if Harius were viewing an event through a window. He saw a boy standing over the lifeless body of a woman whose hair and clothes were matted with blood. Realizing that the boy was his ten-year-old self, Harius watched as he turned the corpse onto its back to reveal his mother's face. Her eyes gaped up at his younger self as if the horrors she had seen at the moment of her passing were permanently seared into them.
Harius watched as his younger self threw his arms across his mother's chest and sobbed, causing his lower lip to quiver as he fought to hold back tears. He did not want to give into the grief surfacing once again inside of him, preferring to maintain control of his faculties as he wondered why this, the most tragic moment of his life, was part of a vision designed to realize his calling as a key steward.
âArchayan."
Harius looked up as the voice pierced the silence. It sounded faint and far off, yet familiar somehow. Getting to his feet, He turned around to see if he could spot someone calling out to him from somewhere deep within the cavern.
âArchayan.â
He finally recognized it as Ellazandra's voice, though he could not see her anywhere amid the light emanating from the torches along the walls. Confused, he turned back to find that the
