“What is that?” Elizabeth said, snatching the card.

“Wait! I wasn’t done–” Billy leaned between the seats.

“Yes, you are. Now sit back and put on that belt, unless you want your father’s belt instead. Understand?”

Billy surrendered and snapped the seatbelt on, even with the idle threat. His father had only spanked him once in his life, and the boy had cried longer and louder than the Brahms thought possible. It would only be worse now with the shape his leg was in, so Billy planned on milking the small window of parental leniency for all it was worth.

“That’s right, the fair,” his mother said, donning her glasses and turning on the cabin light to read the card. “Summer’s over already. Where does the time go?”

“It gets faster as you age, at least for some of us,” his father said, earning him a playful smack on the arm with the card.

“See, Billy,” she looked back over her shoulder, “Tommy’s parents spent all that money trying to impress people, but you’ll get the real thing for only $10.”

“Plus the horse poop,” Stanley quipped, resulting in another smack.

“Oh, my goodness,” Elizabeth flipped over the card. “Now there’s something I bet wasn’t at the party.”

She passed the card back to Billy, and his throat closed tight. He had to put the card in his lap because his hands shook too much for him to read it:
