“Would you open the door, Elisabeth?”

She rose from her chair and did as she was asked, her mind still pondering Titus’s revelations. She must have been so preoccupied with what she’d just heard, she forgot to greet Owen Campbell as she admitted him. He briefly stared at her, then shook his head. “Good morning, Miss Wade.”

“Sorry, Owen,” she said as she shut the door behind him. To make up for her lapse in manners, she quickly brought the detective a cup of coffee, then sat in the chair next to him rather than the chair at the corner of the desk. Apparently, she wasn’t totally comfortable with what he’d told her minutes ago.

Hoping there’d be an opportunity later in the day to discuss the dinner further, he directed his attention to Owen. “Do you have any news for us?”

The detective quickly swallowed the mouthful of coffee he’d just drunk, nodding. “Boy, do I.” He ended with a smirk.

“Don’t hold back, man,” Titus ordered, tempted to get up and shake him.

“I’m getting to it,” Campbell said peevishly. “So last night, I made the rounds of places I thought Henrik Furst might go, without much luck until late in the evening. Running out of other ideas, I went to the Bob and Weave Pub, never imagining I’d actually find him there. But there he was, enthusiastically cheering on one of the boxers and waving a fistful of cash.”

“Ah, so he’s a gambler,” Titus said.

“In a big way. I eased up beside him, and on the pretext of advising him about our local talent, got him talking. After he’d won a couple of times, I suggested we adjourn to the bar and have a drink or two. When he ordered a third pint, I steered the conversation away from boxing by suggesting I knew of a place where a gentleman could find female companionship. The Honey House, of course.” The detective paused for Titus to acknowledge what he’d said so far.

“Was there some prior arrangement with Katie Sullivan?” the lawyer asked.

“No, but I figured I could have a quick word with her if it looked like Furst was going to engage one of her girls for the evening. Turned out I didn’t have to.”

Titus raised his eyebrows, wondering what would come next.

“The man couldn’t keep from telling me his sad story about the girlfriend he had in the vaudeville troupe who’d recently passed on. How he’d been so enamored of her, he’d given up performing this season to follow her.”

“Doesn’t Furst have a wife?” Elisabeth asked.

Titus had almost forgotten she was in the room, but was glad she was since he hadn’t thought about that possibility.

“He does,” Owen confirmed. “He’s left her behind in Detroit. That’s all he said about her, and I got the impression the honeymoon was long over between them. He was more focused on telling me how heartbroken he was over the death of the girl, and that he regretted his mistake.”

Finally! It sounded as if Henrik Furst had as much as admitted he was the murderer.
