11. PAWFULLY SUSPICIOUS

“Why do I feel like we did something wrong?” Ally asks, pacing back and forth in front of the large TV in the rec room.

They drove straight to Ally and John’s house after leaving the lab. Their parents aren’t back from work yet, and Sam already texted her mom that they’d be going there. She likely expects Sam to spend the night, since it is Friday.

“Well, maybe it’s because John took up that guys time for a fake tour and Sam, as usual, snuck off and nosed around in other people’s business,” Hunter sneers. Cramming his hand noisily into a bag of potato chips, his face is hard to read. He may or may not be serious.

“Hey, man, I really do have an assignment. That place is pretty cool and it’s going to make a good paper.” John is uncharacteristically defensive with his friend, and the tension in the room is now obvious.

“Nobody did anything wrong,” Cassy intervenes, hating to see her two friends at odds. “And Ms. Pierce wasn’t mad or anything. Right, Sam?”

Nodding, Sam tosses her notebook on the table. “Like I said before, she was just really nervous. And surprised. When I told her I was there with John for a class assignment she relaxed, but I don’t think she totally bought the explanation. I’m going to have to talk to her,” she adds, reluctantly coming to the realization.

Running her hands through her shoulder-length hair, Sam looks at her friends and then finally her brother. “I might have to agree with you this time, Hunter. At least partway. I was nosing around and doing exactly what Lisa told me I shouldn’t do. Now, Ms. Pierce is probably even more upset than she was before. Because I’m positive now, more than ever, that she’s caught up in something. You should have seen the guilt on her face! And there were definitely dogs in that room.”

“Maybe we should ask Lisa or my mom to talk to her instead?” Ally suggests. “Damage control now might be easier than later.”

“No,” Sam says without even thinking about it. “Trying to explain all of this and dragging them into it will probably just get us into trouble, and then nothing will be done about the dogs!” Thinking about Rocky being taken back to that locked room strengthens Sam’s conviction. “We have to figure out how to get those dogs out of there!”

Spinning, Sam looks pleadingly at John, who’s been quiet since his exchange with Hunter. He’s leaning against the computer desk with a guarded expression on his handsome features.

“Just because you don’t like the fact that they have dogs there, doesn’t mean that they’re doing anything wrong,” he finally says. Putting up a hand to stop Sam’s retort, he then turns and powers up the computer. “I think you might be getting ahead of yourself, Sam,” he continues while tapping at some keys. “The last thing we want to do is run around accusing a legitimate business of doing something illegal, when we really have no idea what’s going on.
