Chapter Seven

“I’m really glad you had time for lunch today,” Courtney said as she got in the passenger seat of Lisa’s SUV. “I just can’t stop thinking about Raquel DuBois.”

“Tell me about it,” her friend said with a frown. “It’s kind of haunting, and I’ve been dying to tell everyone I know. That would be horrible, though, so I feel like I have to keep it to myself.”

Courtney fiddled with her purse thoughtfully. “It occurred to me that Detective Fletcher wanted us to overhear that conversation with Aaron DuBois.”

Lisa kept her eyes on the road, but a slow smile took over her face. “To be honest, I was kind of thinking the same thing. I couldn’t imagine a seasoned man like him making a mistake like that. I don’t think it was us, though. I think it was you, especially since he also asked you to keep your eyes open. I think Fletcher knows just how much of a help you’ve been.”

“Maybe so, but I’m not sure what to do about this. Obviously, since Raquel was having lunch with someone other than her husband, I thought Aaron DuBois would be the prime suspect. You heard him, though. He’s got a solid alibi.”

Courtney did, and she didn’t leave out a single detail. “After all that emotion, Jordan Chamness is either an excellent actor or he’s genuinely grieving for Raquel.”

“Is it impossible for the killer to grieve?” Lisa asked, one eyebrow raised as she pulled into the parking lot in front of Salazar’s.

“No, I suppose not. Call it a gut feeling. Besides, we heard the two of them talking when they were here in the restaurant. Raquel was being really nasty to Jordan, and all he did was console her and treat her like some wounded bird that needed help. I think he’s just a big sucker. In a good way, mostly.” It was certainly a good thing when it came to Jordan’s love for Maggie, who was undoubtedly living high on the hog now that her biggest fan had taken her home. It might not have been so great for him when it came to his relationship with Raquel, however.

“Okay. So we can cross off both the husband and the boyfriend. Who’s next on the list?” Lisa asked as they got out of the car.

“I don’t know. I only knew her from my brief encounter with her at the shelter. I’ll have to do some research to see where to look next. It’s been keeping me up at night, though. Well, that and Peppa.” The little progress that Jessi had made with the beagle mix was wonderful, but it was also extremely slow. That was the nature of things when a scared dog
