Chapter Seven
âIâm really glad you had time for lunch today,â Courtney said as she got in the passenger seat of Lisaâs SUV. âI just canât stop thinking about Raquel DuBois.â
âTell me about it,â her friend said with a frown. âItâs kind of haunting, and Iâve been dying to tell everyone I know. That would be horrible, though, so I feel like I have to keep it to myself.â
Courtney fiddled with her purse thoughtfully. âIt occurred to me that Detective Fletcher wanted us to overhear that conversation with Aaron DuBois.â
Lisa kept her eyes on the road, but a slow smile took over her face. âTo be honest, I was kind of thinking the same thing. I couldnât imagine a seasoned man like him making a mistake like that. I donât think it was us, though. I think it was you, especially since he also asked you to keep your eyes open. I think Fletcher knows just how much of a help youâve been.â
âMaybe so, but Iâm not sure what to do about this. Obviously, since Raquel was having lunch with someone other than her husband, I thought Aaron DuBois would be the prime suspect. You heard him, though. Heâs got a solid alibi.â
âWhich leaves the boyfriend!â Lisa concluded.
âIt did, until he came into the shelter and asked to take Maggie home,â Courtney replied.
âWhat? Donât tell me that when Iâm driving! Youâve got to be kidding me!â Lisa was getting excited, bouncing up and down in her seat. âTell me what happened.â
Courtney did, and she didnât leave out a single detail. âAfter all that emotion, Jordan Chamness is either an excellent actor or heâs genuinely grieving for Raquel.â
âIs it impossible for the killer to grieve?â Lisa asked, one eyebrow raised as she pulled into the parking lot in front of Salazarâs.
âNo, I suppose not. Call it a gut feeling. Besides, we heard the two of them talking when they were here in the restaurant. Raquel was being really nasty to Jordan, and all he did was console her and treat her like some wounded bird that needed help. I think heâs just a big sucker. In a good way, mostly.â It was certainly a good thing when it came to Jordanâs love for Maggie, who was undoubtedly living high on the hog now that her biggest fan had taken her home. It might not have been so great for him when it came to his relationship with Raquel, however.
âOkay. So we can cross off both the husband and the boyfriend. Whoâs next on the list?â Lisa asked as they got out of the car.
âI donât know. I only knew her from my brief encounter with her at the shelter. Iâll have to do some research to see where to look next. Itâs been keeping me up at night, though. Well, that and Peppa.â The little progress that Jessi had made with the beagle mix was wonderful, but it was also extremely slow. That was the nature of things when a scared dog
