Thirty-Three

The weeks to Kayla’s party started to fly. Connor knew in the back of his mind that the one person he should be most worried about was Mirko. Mirko Whatshisname. He had seen it on the share issuance; he had written it down carefully, made up the treasury order, and then thrown the paper away, not wanting to be reminded on a constant basis of that little transaction.

So he owed the man money—big deal. He owed Rafael money too, and a host of other people. Once Perfect Cannabis took off, none of this would even matter to anyone any longer. Big effing deal.

David continued to be a pain in the ass, as he had known he would, but man, what choice did he have? He needed an accountant. Actually, he probably needed one on staff. He just couldn’t get himself to face that little fact. Accountants were as useless as tits on a—well, they were just useless.

Now, suddenly, they were facing the second quarter financial statements to be filed with the SEC. First quarter had been easy-breezy—no transactions, nothing material to be filed really. Now... But in order to get the filings signed off on, he needed David to sort things out quickly and stop asking stupid questions. Shit. Some days it was enough to make him tired of holding all those strings in his hands. Some days. Such was the life of a dealmaker.

He worked at it, not letting himself get too down because of all of those little things, but it wasn’t an easy job. He built himself up—every day, when he went to see investors, he spent half an hour mentally building himself up, getting into winner mode, and going out there to slay the dragons. All of this irritation was starting to mess with his game. He hadn’t managed to land anything but small-time investors in weeks. Little stuff that was gone by the time he paid Tessa and himself and a couple of utilities, depending on his mood. It had to be the irritation that was causing it, because if there was one thing he knew how to do, then it was sell.

And then there was Kayla. Her party had become a rock-star event by now. If he heard her one more time nattering on about the famous names she had invited, the money people, the stars, the entertainers…

Normally, he would have been happy to indulge her, but this time, it was costing him big-time. Christ, did she have to
