The man beside Marion elbowed her and pointed to the singer. The similarities between Marion and the girl from the song were flimsy at best. Their gender. The fact they both rode something two-wheeled. Still, she smiled. That was, until the final lines:

Until she hit a rut and it all went askew

I saw her red and white, and her blue too

Despite this song having nothing to do with her, Marion’s cheeks heated. The men roared with laughter and applause. The soldier beside her paused long enough to say, “He wrote that one himself.”

“You don’t say,” Marion responded, making to stand. “If you’ll ex—”

“Stay for one more,” the man prodded. “For the captain.”

Oh, was it? Marion sighed, resolving to sit through one more song.

Another man took the makeshift stage constructed of crates, but Marion was fairly certain his balance wouldn’t keep him there for long, especially after he called up a second fellow to join him in a skit. With eyes rolling, they began singing, both with surprisingly pleasant voices.

After the last performance, she dared to let herself listen to the words.

If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy

Nothin’ else would matter in the world today

We would go on lovin’ in the same old way

A Garden of Eden, just made for two with nothing to mar our joy

I would say such wonderful things to you . . .
