More recently, Sarah Lindsay’s 2002 poem “The Common Fruit Fly” imagines the insect’s viewpoint on the long arc of human research with Drosophila. The first two stanzas establish a tone of lament:

Five hundred generations

since we traced the sweetness above a windfall apple.

Instead we taste your scheduled anesthesias

and wake on a shelf in flasks to be filled

with our stubborn procreation.

You pour us out on Mondays.

You sort us with thick fingers.

We are the white-eyed, the red-eyed, the eyeless,

with full wings, with crumpled vestigial wings.

We perceive the buzz of fluorescence you call quiet,

its flicker you call light.

The chemical stream of your midafternoon banana

sings behind our mouthparts.

We are the tested.
