CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Has something happened?” Dr. Evelyn was studying me. She looked angelic in a white silk shirt and sparkly white sandals, her eyes glowing with concern. “You seem more stressed today.”

“Yes.” Where to even begin? Not with Jake finding out about my stay at a mental institution. Or with Oliver’s sex parties and the notebook. Those issues were too big. I wasn’t ready to touch them.

I opened a smaller can of worms. “I received some of my records from Garden of Hope. Apparently a couple—Michael and Trudy Brown—adopted me when I was two months old.”

“Really?” Dr. Evelyn tilted her head. “Do you know what happened to them?”

I shook my head. “Every time I thought about Googling their names, I felt this deep panic. I think something bad happened.”

“Well,” she said. “If you’d like, we can try to go back further in hypnosis today, to a time when you were with them.”

The red light flashed in my mind. Danger. I gritted my teeth. Time to be brave. “Ok. Let’s try.”

“Good girl.” Dr. Evelyn rewarded my bravery with a sincere smile.

We went through the now familiar routine, and I found myself falling quickly into a relaxed state. My body was heavy. My mind was creating the beach and the pile of memory stones.

“The sand is warm, the sound of the ocean is soothing. You are deeply relaxed. Do you see the stones?”

“Yes.” My voice was far away.

“Good. I want you to choose one that holds an early childhood memory. One from when you were with Michael and Trudy Brown. Pick up the stone and tell me what you see.”

I was drawn to a mossy green stone. It’s warmth radiated in my palm. A memory began to shimmer like a mirage and then suddenly I was in a boxy living room, seated on a worn, plaid sofa. My small feet dangled in the air.

“There are pink and white balloons tied to the chair and streamers hanging from the light. I’m waiting. Oh ... it’s my birthday. I’m so excited. Mom went to pick up Dad at work and get my cake. It’s going to be pink and have a blue horse with wings. That’s what I wanted, and Dad said I could have any kind of cake I wanted. Ms. Tilley at his work makes the best cakes. Someone is knocking on the door. Why would Mom and Dad knock?”

The red light flashed. A horrible scream ripped through my mind. I was sucked into a whirlpool of darkness.

Blinking, I slowly came back to present awareness. “Did I fall asleep?” I asked, clearing my throat. My body was drained, and I felt like I was crawling out of a deep slumber beneath the earth. I unfolded my legs, which were pulled up onto the sofa. My feet were tingling from the position. My eyes were stinging like I’d been crying, but I didn’t feel upset at all.

Dr. Evelyn was calm but something had changed in her eyes. They were alert, too shiny. “In a way, you did.
