THE RIDE HOME IS QUIET. I'm stuffed from the triple chocolate brownie cake with ice cream Del and I shared.

I glance over and notice that his jaw is tense.

"What's up?" I ask.

"Sorry, that whole scene just got me in my head. Dragging up ancient history."

I reach over and rest my hand on his forearm.

"My wife cheated on me," he blurts out. "A lot. I found out she'd been screwing around pretty much the entire time we were married."

"I'm so sorry." I know exactly how horrible that feels.

"Yeah. And then I was the bad guy for asking for paternity tests." He pulls into my driveway. "Maybe I was. I don't know."

We sit in the car, watching the rain in the headlights reflecting off my garage door.

I'm dying to know, but I'm never going to ask.

"They both came back positive. Not that it matters. They're my kids no matter what some stupid test says. Allie was old enough to understand, but I'm not sure Ben will ever forgive me for getting him tested."

I'm not sure what to say, so we just sit, holding hands.

Finally, he gives a little laugh and says, "She was totally not spongeworthy."

I laugh along with him, and don't even point out all the ways that makes no sense. I also don't say anything about the growing feelings I have, or the physical attraction, or the fact that Del is the most spongeworthy man I've been around in years.
