CHAPTER FORTY

Bucharest

April 1993

ALONE IN HIS hotel room, Hefflin mulled over what Baghdadi had told him. As The Owl had said, Boris had had many friends throughout the world, among them apparently this Baghdadi character, a Lebanese security operative, if he could be believed. Baghdadi knew Boris as Janus, the two-faced god who, as Baghdadi had said, looked both East and West, a sharer of intel. So the Russians had put out a bounty on Boris, offering a hundred thousand dollars, along with a suggestion that Hefflin was a man with some knowledge of Boris. Now everyone would be searching for Boris, and Hefflin.

Fucking Stefan. He knows how to squeeze.

As he was about to pull out a Johnnie Walker Black from his minibar, he noticed the envelope that had apparently been slipped under the door. It had no postage markings. Hand delivered. On its face his name was written in fine calligraphy. Inside was a handwritten invitation for that evening at eight p.m. at “The Business Roundtable.” Underneath, it stated that a car would pick him up in front of his hotel at seven thirty. There was no telephone number or address for him to RSVP.

They’re assuming I will accept.
