Seven Years Later...

The phone on my paper covered desk at the Sacramento Chronicle rings and I pull the pen from my mouth, divert my eyes from my computer screen, and pick up the source of the offending noise.

"Whitney Knight," I say into the receiver.

"Whitney, it's Mr. Jeffers. Can I see you in my office please?"

"Of course, sir." I smile to myself and put the phone down.

Greg, or Mr. Jeffers, has been my boss for just over a year now. Mommy and Daddy bought the paper for him about two years after I started working here, so he'd have something to do in between tennis matches. He's done a decent job with it though, especially for only being a couple of years older than me. He doesn’t run a tight ship, but everything manages to get done in a way that keeps things chugging along.

Oh, and he's super cute which doesn't hurt as well as being half decent in bed, as I found out when we started messing around together a few weeks back.

I roll my office chair back and stand up from my desk.

"I was just going to see if you wanted to go to lunch," Marla says from the cubicle next to mine.

"Oh, sorry. Mr. Jeffers just called me into his office. I brought my lunch today anyway," I say before reaching for my pad of paper and pen off my desk.

"Your loss. It's margarita Monday over at The Stag's Head," she says and then laughs.

"Have one for me." I smile and then walk across the office to his big patch of real estate in the corner.

I give a small wave to Greg's secretary as I pass her. She's grabbing her purse from her desk drawer. Must be headed to join everyone at Margarita Monday.

I knock on the open door and walk into the office. Greg looks up from his computer, a sly grin crossing his face. "Do you mind closing the door? What I have to discuss with you is more of a private matter."

I shut the door behind me. Greg rises from his desk and slowly walks toward me, his dark eyes scanning my body up and down, practically devouring me.

There's no question what's on his mind right now and though we've had fun outside of the office we've never crossed that line inside the work place. Somehow that feels like a bigger deal than the two of us getting together in the first place.

But Greg is more persistent than a dog in heat. For months he's been coming on to me, making suggestive comments here and there. If he was anyone other than my boss I'm sure I would've given in much sooner. I mean, he's attractive, is steadily employed and doesn't have a baby mama to contend with. In other words, he's dateable.

Eventually, after a staff outing at a bar, too many margaritas and a shared cab, we’re here..

When Greg reaches me he stands almost toe-to-toe with me, then leans past me and flicks the lock on the door.
