Having spent the last few days mulling over my theory about Tristan and Tess and feeling desperate to put it to the test, I now have my opportunity to do just that. It’s Saturday, and I’ve told Mark that I’m going back to the wedding dress shop to check on a few alterations. But rather begrudgingly, I’ve told him yet another lie.

That’s because I’m not going anywhere near the dress shop today.

I’m going to that house again instead.

I’ve taken the car and left Mark at home, although it wasn’t as simple as me just picking up the keys and walking out the front door. Mark, under the assumption that I’m a highly anxious bride-to-be, offered to come with me today, presuming that I might need his support in order to keep myself calm and not get too worked up about things. But I managed to negate his concerns and told him that I’ll be fine and won’t be too long, and thank heavens for that, because if he had insisted on coming with me, then I could never have driven to Tristan and Tess’s place now.

Remembering the address and the route the taxi driver took to get there when he dropped me off the last time I was here, I find the street in question and park up a safe distance away from the house. Then I approach on foot, just like I did last time, and once I’m back in my fairly well-concealed spot behind the willow tree, I study the windows of the house for any sign of movement.

But I don’t see anything, and with no car on the driveway, I wonder if the occupants are out. It is a Saturday morning, so it’s possible they were up early and left to go and do something with their weekend. Shopping. Meeting friends. More wedding planning. Or maybe they’ve gone away for the whole weekend, booking themselves into a little holiday cottage for one or two days away.

The thought that me coming here might have been a complete waste of time is not a pleasant one, and I worry that I’ve told Mark yet another lie for nothing. But then I hear a car approaching, and as I look down to the end of the street, I see a vehicle coming towards me.

Squeezing myself up against the trunk of the tree and hiding as best I can beneath the leaves that hang down around me, I stay out of view of the driver, and it’s a good job I do because once they’re closer, I see who is behind the wheel.

It’s Tess.

And Tristan is sitting right beside her in the passenger seat.

The car parks on the driveway, and both occupants of the vehicle take their time getting out. The doors remain closed for several moments before finally the driver’s side door opens first, and Tess appears. But as soon as I see her more clearly, it’s obvious that she is in a bad mood. Her face is scrunched into a scowl, and her shoulders look stiff, as if she’s carrying a lot of tension in her body.
