Many tiny creatures live in streams and ponds. How do they get around?

Rowing

Aquatic insects that live in the open water get around by swimming. They wave their long hind legs—which are flattened and equipped with a fringe of bristles—like a pair of oars. Some, such as water boatmen and predaceous diving beetles, swim on their abdomens. Some, such as backswimmers, swim on their backs.
