CHAPTER FOURTEEN

ON THE

ELDER BROTHERS

OF MANKIND

YOU WELL MAY FOR SOME TIME HAVE had the question on your mind how I myself had come to know those very few about whose work I have to tell you in my books.

You thus may want to know how first these sages came into my life, which happened long before I could have even dreamed of one day being made a member of their circle.

I fear you would dismiss the very first encounter as an instance of “hallucination” if it occurred in your life as it did in mine, in the early days of my childhood.

Perhaps you feel but little inclination to believe there is a way of “leaving” this body of flesh and blood without “dying,” and that the few endowed with this capacity are able to journey, in their fluidic likeness, the greatest distances at almost the speed of thought; and also that in certain places and under strictly set conditions they are able, on occasion, to make their presence visible, tangible, and audible in such a way that you could not distinguish them from mortals of flesh and blood.

That faculty, however, is not by any means restricted solely to the authentic masters of the Spirit’s Brotherhood, and many a legend may be rooted in the practice of this gift.

You cannot even be completely sure that you do not yourself possess that faculty; for many people practice it unknowingly, which is to say, that in their state of lucid wakefulness their mental consciousness is unaware of what they do while sleeping.

Here we find ourselves in a domain where our Western scientific disciplines do not yet know the border lines; a field they likely never will be able to explore more fully since all examination of this sphere requires the entire human being, not merely the mortal brain.

However, if a thing has not been “scientifically established,” it does not, for most people, actually exist; and far be it from me to hold it against you if in this case you choose to side with the majority.

I cannot claim that my own way of thinking would be different had not my personal experience taught me otherwise.

Given that experience, however, I can tell you that such matters are not merely possible, but do occur more frequently by far than even those suspect who are “convinced.”

THE FIRST ENCOUNTER with a messenger of the community to which I now belong occurred in the way I here described when I had barely learned my ABC’s.

At first I took him for a beggar to whom my mother often gave some soup; but when he—and I hesitate to even speak of it—would come to me again and again, behind closed doors, or suddenly appeared before me in the open air, in field and forest, and just as quickly vanished, my childlike understanding sought another explanation, to which my fatherly friend and guardian kindly in his wisdom gave consent, even though it strictly speaking was not true.
