As they ate a hearty breakfast the next morning, they hounded their father to let them go exploring.

He knew they would want to, so had directed two of his staff to go with them with supplies in case they wanted food and water, or needed help.

They high-fived one another, then raced back to their rooms to dress appropriately and grab the map for directions. Setting off with their guides, they made their way back to the laboratory, and, after checking the map, walked past the building, around the crater, and toward the waterfall that gently fell into the pool.

“I think it’s here,” Rose said. “Some kind of path either beside or behind the waterfall.” They pushed aside the vines and plants and found a naturally ingrained staircase leading up. They climbed, finding it hard going, but three hours later they emerged from the greenery to stand atop the mountain, seeing the beautiful spectacle before them.

“Oh, it’s beautiful,” Rose murmured, taking in the distant mountains and hills, the green plains and ponds of water. This side of the mountain seemed much higher than the side they’d just come up, and Rose ran back and forth, gauging the distance, looking down at the laboratory then looking at the rolling plains. “It’s two to three times the height on this side, and if it took us three hours to get up, it will take us just as long to get down then twice as long to get back up. We’d be climbing all day.”

“We could go down halfway,” Ricky suggested. “See what’s down there and then come back up. Maybe next time we could bring camping gear and a tent and stay the night.”

Behind their backs, the two guides exchanged worried looks.

“I do not think that would be safe,” one guide said. “Many wild creatures ready to eat you. Come, let’s walk a little way down instead, just to that flat rock down there.” He pointed down to a large chunk of rock jutting out of the mountainside. “We can stop to eat and enjoy the view.”

An hour later, they made it to the rock to discover the beautiful wildflowers growing from the outcrop.

Rose pulled her camera out of her bag and took pictures from every angle, and not just of the flowers. Scanning the plains below, she snapped photos of everything, hoping to put together some sort of photographic map of the area. A movement caught her eye and she zoomed in. “Is that…?”

Ricky shielded his eyes and looked in the general direction. “What?”

Rose pulled back and glanced at her brother, mouthing the word ape, before looking back into the viewfinder. Waiting for the image to clear, she followed the movement, but was disturbed by rocks falling at her feet and landing against her legs. “What’s going on?” She looked down then back towards the mountain wall.

“Just some loose rocks,” one of the guides said, stealing a glance at his companion. “Do you want to eat?”

“No, not yet–” Rose was cut off by the rumbling of the mountain.
