S o much heat. Outside and in.

Where am I?

Lust flooded his veins. Heat baked his body.

Home.

No, not my home.

Where was she? How dare she hide from him?

All around him flames snapped and licked, fiery tongues of reds, oranges, and yellows.

She's mine.

Trees burning. Crops burning. The acrid scent of scorched sugar cane.

There she is.

He grabbed her and pulled her by the back of her hair, her face hidden by dancing flames. An unbearable craving pulsed through his blood.

What am I doing?

Just a dream.

Yet there he was, cinching her hair, laughing as she tried to escape, the sticks and stones in the soil cutting her bare feet.

Her screams fueled him. He ripped the dress from her flesh and ran his fingers down her skin, ignoring the cracking flames surrounding them. They were alone, and she was his.

She writhed and kicked. He gripped her more tightly. So powerless she was in his arms. A belt appeared in his hand.

Stop. Wake up.

Leather snapped bare calves. Her skin welted and oozed. His lust grew thicker.

No, please. This isn't me.

He went back to watching. No, participating. He would have her. With a fistful of thick hair, he yanked her head so hard her neck almost snapped. And so what if it did? There were others. So many others. But she was his favorite. So innocent. So warm.

No!

Ignoring her pleas, he whipped her over and over again, her back a grid of red weals. Her fighting ceased. Bending her limp frame over, he took what he came for. When he finished, he dropped her to the ground, where her body curled like an infant's, her tender flesh torn and bloody from his belt. She lay quiet.

But still he heard screaming. Whose?

Slowly the girl rolled onto her back. Her face came into view.

No. I don't want to see this. Please.

Moisture bathed his body. His heart hammered like a drum.

Wake up. Wake up!

But it was too late. Dark eyes of fear and pain stared up at him. Hatred too.

Who was screaming? He scanned the purplish night, the burning crops, the flaming home. So hot. So much heat.

His gaze returned to the girl, but it was no longer the face of an adolescent. It was someone else. Someone he knew. Those deep eyes, those arched brows.

Was he mad? What had he done to her?

Wake up. Wake up. Wake up.

Vengeance in her eyes. Bared teeth. Snarling lips.

No, it wasn't me, he tried to shout, but nothing came out, his lips drier than the leather belt in his hands.

He backed away. The woman—his friend—stood and advanced toward him. No longer naked, she was cloaked in a white gown. From her mouth poured screams. Shrieks. Wails.

Shh, please, I'm dreaming, we're dreaming, please, stop screaming.

Howling, her mouth formed a deep, black oval. She pulled a knife from her gown. He backed up but something stopped his escape. Though the knife plunged forward, something else stabbed his back.

No! Don't!

Ben's eyes shot open. He blinked and flailed to orient himself. Something poked his back. He tried to call out, but cement sealed his lips, and teeth trapped his tongue.
