‘You did this on purpose, didn’t you?’ Percy rushed over to me, his face pinched and tense. ‘Left me standing here like a plum, hanging on. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.’

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.’ I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. I gripped his arm. It was a relief to escape from that dark, claustrophobic room.

He put his arms around me and pulled me into a hug. ‘What happened? Are you hurt?’

I shook my head. ‘I need to find Ben.’

‘He’s at the factory. With Constance,’ he said, a note of despondency in his voice.

He took my hand and we walked along Dolphin Street. I looked back at the door of number twenty-six. I’d slammed it closed and no one had come out after me. I guessed Blanche was still sitting where I’d left her.

Percy followed my gaze back to the house. ‘Who was in there?’

‘I’ll tell you when we find Ben.’ I didn’t want to have to repeat this tale more than once.

Ben was with Constance in her office, discussing plans for the party at Crookham Hall. He was concerned she was putting herself in danger, and I sensed she was enjoying his attention. I glimpsed the flash of annoyance in her eyes when Percy and I interrupted them.

‘What is it?’ she asked with a hint of impatience. Since Freda Bray’s revelations, Constance seemed to have rediscovered her sense of purpose. She planned to gain full control of Tolfree & Timpson. And she was determined to ensure Mrs Siddons retained her seat in the general election.

With trepidation, I told them what I’d done. I’d expected Ben to be first to explode, but Percy beat him to it.

‘For goodness sake, Iris. You went into that house, pretending to be…’ He flapped his arms, unable to finish the sentence.

‘Blanche Denton.’ Constance closed her eyes. ‘I can’t believe it.’

Ben picked up the telephone and asked to be put through to Deptford police station. He didn’t look at me.

Percy scowled and paced the room while Constance sat still at her desk. I was hoping someone would offer me a stiff drink. No one did.

Ben spoke for some minutes with Detective Inspector Yates before replacing the earpiece on the cradle. Constance and Percy looked at him expectantly, but he ignored them.

‘Iris.’ Ben’s voice was hard with anger. ‘Don’t ever do anything like that again.’

He strode out of the room before I could reply.
