Somewhere in Colombia

Amadis Noguera gave the putter a spark of movement, tapping the Titleist across the smooth tiled floor and into the tipped over cup about three feet away.

He was in the open-walled lounge of his estate, surrounded by the sounds of a waterfall, streaming sunlight, and bright green foliage all around. He retrieved the golf ball and repositioned further away than his previous shot. Addressing the ball, he brought the putter back and forward, a little harder tap on the ball this time, and watched it travel the distance only to stop short of the cup.

A little harder. He picked up the ball again and returned to his spot. Always a little harder. A bit more effort. That was the story of Noguera’s life. If he wanted something, he had to work for it, and often fell into the “two steps forward, one step back” way of doing things. He took it in stride. He always reached the goal, even if it took more time than he figured.

“Don’t you have something important to do?”

Noguera looked over his shoulder at the doorway to the lounge, where his sister stood.

Gabriella Noguera Suarez still had a few bruises from her fight with the American, but she hid them well. The welts on her face, covered by makeup, were only visible if you knew they were already there. Otherwise her touch-ups were quite thorough. She folded her arms. Her long dark hair hung well below her shoulders and was perfectly straight.

Amadis returned to his pose. “This is important.”

Tap.

A little harder this time, and the ball made it all the way to the cup, but stopped at the rim of the glass and bounced back.

Amadis straightened and let out a quiet curse.

“Put that away. We have a meeting to prepare for.”

Amadis ignored his sister as she walked into the center of the lounge, where all the furniture was, and dropped onto a couch, crossing her long legs, her arms folded once again, her eyes narrowed in frustration. The open floor surrounding the furniture was usually used for a food spread when they were entertaining. Screens covered the open areas at night and when it rained but, thankfully, the weather was nice enough that those screens weren’t required now.

Amadis Noguera parked his putter in a corner and helped himself to a drink from a nearby wet bar. He carried the bourbon, straight, to the sitting area and grinned at his sister as he took a sip. He sat down across from her, sinking softly into the cushions of the plush leather couch. Despite having owned the couch for a couple of years, the leather still smelled fresh.

“Why are you so upset?” he said.

“We have problems.”

“We do indeed. We will handle those problems. After my last chat with Rockwell I’m very much looking forward to seeing Kasson and Ross, and we can add our own input and see what they want to implement.”

“Who attacked me?” she said.

“I’ve given you the best answer I can,” Noguera said.
