{ Chapter 16 }
Laney stared at the back of Wes as the fine drizzle started to collect on her cheeks, chilling her face. His wide shoulders swayed back and forth with the rhythm of his horseâs steps, impervious to the spotty rain that had haunted them during the last hour.
In a single file on their horses, behind her rode a man sheâd just met, Rune Smith, an old friend of Wesâs that heâd dragged out of a tavern by the docks as they made their way out of London. Or rather, Wes dragged him from a room above the tavern, if the manâs disheveled clothes and the overwhelming cloud of cheap rose perfume hanging in the air around him were any indication of what heâd been doing at the moment Wes required his presence on this blasted trip.
Five hours sheâd been on the horse set between them, her backside on the sidesaddle rubbing raw, the box from Morton thumping against her thigh in the pocket of her skirt. Theyâd changed horses only once and Wes had only given her five minutes of reprieve from the pace heâd set for their journey.
After the incident on the bridge, she hadnât questioned Wes when heâd stormed into the drawing room from the front door, reported Mr. Filmoreâs untimely death, and then declared they were leaving London.
Immediately.
Heâd grabbed her hand, pulling her, dragging her with him through his townhouse as he went to his chambers and packed what he saw fitânot clothes, but coin, two pistols and several blades that he strapped to his body.
That heâd even had that much weaponry on hand in his townhouse set a cold ripple down her spine. That he thought it the most important thing to pack had set ice into her veins.
So sheâd kept her mouth shut.
If there was one thing sheâd learned to do with a brother like Morton, it was to keep her mouth shut.
Keep quiet and it would all work out.
Except when it didnât.
Except when sheâd had to sell most of the belongings of Gruggin Manor.
Except when sheâd had to worry about how she was to feed both the staff and her own belly.
Except when she would lie awake at night, wondering how many more nights sheâd be able to look at her own ceiling before Gruggin Manor was finally taken from her to pay off debts.
Those were the times that keeping her mouth shut hadnât worked out.
And she was beginning to think sheâd been a fool all these years for doing so.
Keeping her mouth shut and going along with Wes dragging her from place to place was getting her no closer to the life she wanted so desperately to get back to. Secure in Gruggin Manor with enough funds to last her the rest of her days. No matter on what had just happened with Wes. He had his life. She had hers. Just because their bodies were always viscerally attracted to each other, it in no way could lead to more between the two of them.
