Her white skin seemed to shine. Seiichiro felt her skin seemed brighter now that she was lying on the futon than when she had sat on the tatami. This impression was carefully created by the Yoshiwara attention to detail, for the height of the candle stand was selected with that very purpose in mind. Seiichiro was of course oblivious of that strategy, but he was keenly aware of the brilliant beauty of the tone of her skin.

Takao lay on Seiichiro’s left. It was said by a connoisseur of a later era that one could tell whether a woman of the quarter liked or disliked a customer by the side on which she lay down. In this case, her lying on his left was evidence that she was fond of him, because it allowed him the free use of his right hand.
