Chapter 19

For a Sunday night, the road up the hill is understandably peaceful. I scan the street as I pull up to the house. There are several cars parked along the road, but none that look like the one I saw earlier today belonging to my tail. If Clark didn’t send someone, who was out there? Or maybe it was nobody.

I pull into the garage, get out of the Lexus and take one more look up and down the clean, neighborly street, lit by a few streetlights. The calming sound of crickets fills the air. I should feel at ease, but my tension is at a high. I close the garage, walk inside and hang up the keys on the rack. I glance at the clock on the wall of the dining area. It’s almost ten p.m.

I set Bobby’s diary on the table and sit down. I pause and look over at the photo frame on the shelf. The pictures are still changing every ten seconds. Of all the things here, it’s comforting because it’s predictable. Unlike everything else that’s been going on for me these past few days. I stare at the current digital photo now shining in the dark. It’s of Jackie and me sitting on a large rock by some beach shore wearing sunglasses, tank tops, shorts, and sandals. I wish I could feel now whatever I felt on that beach. The picture changes and I sigh. The pictures come and then vanish, just like my memories of those same events. Something about that picture frame has a special meaning. It’s almost like it’s trying to help remind me who I am.

I lean back and realize how badly I need to get some sleep before I go see Maria. I realize I may have a full docket of clients on Monday. I find my work number and call it. A woman’s voice announces the office is closed and tells me to leave a message. I do, but I don’t know what my female secretary’s name is.

“Uh, this is Doctor Moore. No doubt you’ve heard about the incidents that have occurred in the past few days. Please reschedule all my appointments for the next few days. And call me back to let me know how things are going.” I think for a moment. “I’ve lost my cell phone, so please call my home phone instead. Thank you.” I leave that number and hang up.

I still don’t know the cell phone’s access code, but I discover I can set its alarm, take photos and even make emergency calls without it.

I set the alarm for my meeting, turn off the lights, kick off my shoes, and lie down on the living room sofa. I still feel like a stranger here and uncomfortable about sleeping in the bed, and I really don’t want to fall into a deep sleep. I close my eyes.
