He continued reading where he’d left off.

A rift seemed to be forming between the people who wanted to try to restart the mission, and a faction who believed they should accept that it was dead and focus solely on their own survival.

That second group found a voice in Tom Prentice, Father Theodore, who was increasingly at odds with both Father Francis and the Holy Father about the question.

The fight was developing along religious lines. According to Father Theodore, God had compelled humanity to build the Station for a reason, perhaps as punishment for some unspecified crime, and the mission, which Summers still hadn’t described in detail, but which had something to do with returning to the surface, violated His wishes.

The Cataclysm, as it became known, added fuel to that fire. Father Theodore proclaimed that it was inflicted on the inhabitants as punishment for refusing to accept God’s original plan.

Amazingly, Father Theodore found many to agree with him, and he developed a considerable following. He’d apparently tapped into a long-standing sense of hopelessness. People were tired of living for some distant future; they wanted to live for the here and now. But they seemed oblivious to the fact that they might be throwing away their children’s hopes and dreams.

The survivors were still working sixteen hour days. Nerves were frayed, and tensions were running high. The split between those seeking to continue the mission and those opposed grew to frightening proportions.

A type of insanity seemed to grip the Station. The two sides, especially Father Theodore’s followers, were turning into religious fanatics.
