It turned out that saying yes was the easiest part of the whole deal. Packing was something Zuri loathed and therefore hesitated doing. She had been living in the same apartment since she moved out of her parentsâ house. If she wanted, she could have moved some place bigger, but it suited her. She knew every nook and cranny of the place.
She didnât ask any of her friends to help her move. She packed everything that was dear to her in little cardboard boxes. There werenât many. Most of her childhood mementos were in her parentsâ house still. It amused her that her whole adult life fit neatly into three suitcases and perhaps a dozen cardboard boxes.
Since there was such petty stuff, it took her and Kent only two trips in his SUV to get everything moved. She said goodbye to Mrs Reyes, promising to come by and check up on her. The old woman was sad, but wished her a happy life.
âOh, heâs very nice.â She said, tugging on her arm when she spied Kent as he brought down some boxes. Zuri couldnât resist a knowing look as she gave the woman a conspiratorial wink.
âI think so.â She was in complete agreement.
Once she unpacked her stuff at Kentâs, something that took just a few hours, it surprised her at how everything seemed to have just melded into the furnishings. She took that as a sign that she and Kent belonged together.
Kent, to his credit, did everything he could to help her settle in. She had a free run of the house; he had said. He was just grateful to have her there. The one thing that amused him was her stash of makeup and perfumes that had taken over their master bathroom.
He was happy that it had his and hers and so it had spared his sink, but only just. The other that had gone unused since he had been in that home, now belonged to her and it seemed they covered every inch with blush or shadow or perfume. She loved to try fresh scents and makeup she had confessed, and loathed to throw anything away.
Everybody at work guessed something was up with her. Her usual cheery demeanour seemed to be even more pronounced. One doctor even remarked that she had put a heart emoji on a chart when documenting a patientâs positive improvement.
She refused to let them in on her love life. Part of the reason was because she didnât want nosy people putting two and two together. They frowned on fraternising with the patients. When Kent came in for his checkups, she made sure she didnât work on those days for fear that someone might send her somewhere near him. They wouldnât have been able to hide our feelings.
When they found the time between their crazy hours, they filled the days with wild sex. They spent the rest of the time lounging about the house or watching television. They also shared a love that involved food. Zuri loved to cook, and he loved to eat.
