Theo had well and truly lost it.

He didn’t know whether to blame Tanya, Elmdale, his brother or the little girl currently piping little mounds of dough onto the baking sheet Bree had prepared for her. They were a tag team in the kitchen, him and his little shadow, and he’d miss her when her family checked out.

You’ll miss Bree more though. The true cause of your impulsive invitation to Paris.

Because he knew their time was coming to an end. Soon the O’Briens would leave and then there would be no reason for Bree to keep calling by. The B & B would be empty, he’d have served his purpose and fulfilled his promise to his brother.

And then Paris had struck him—Paris and Bree’s dream to go there.

The perfect excuse to spend more time together.

No commitment, no promises, just more time.

But to what end?

‘Theo?’ Bree nudged him back to reality. ‘Becca’s asking if she can sprinkle on the sugar.’

‘Oh, yeah, sure!’ He picked up the bowl of crushed sugar cubes. ‘Go for it. You’d normally use pearl sugar, but this is the next best thing and you’ll hardly notice a difference.’

‘A bit hard to notice the difference when I’ve never had one before...’ She helped Becca with the bowl as the girl scooped out the sugar.

‘You’ve never had a chouquette?’

‘Never been to Paris, never had a chouquette. Are you trying to rub it in?’

‘Absolutely not.’

‘And you will go to Paris, Aunt Bree. Uncle Theo is going to take you.’ Becca stated it so matter-of-factly and he couldn’t help but smile. If ever he needed an eager accomplice in his master plan, he had unwittingly gained one.

‘If Aunt Bree agrees...’ the woman herself murmured, her eyes alive with spark as she looked at him and shook her head.

‘If Aunt Bree knows what’s good for her, she will.’

‘You know, Uncle Theo can be frustratingly annoying when he wants to be.’

‘Annoying. Why?’ Becca’s frown of confusion made a return. ‘When my brother’s being annoying it’s because he pulls my hair. Does Uncle Theo pull your hair?’

Bree’s face was a picture. He had. Once. And the memory had heat streaking through his limbs, hers, too, if her glow and stifled choke was anything to go by.

‘I’ll just get these in the oven,’ she blurted.

‘Great idea. And you, little miss, can show me the masterpiece you’ve been working on.’

He swung her down, cherishing the little giggle of delight she gave.

Yes, he’d miss Becca and their time together. She made him feel good about himself, made him feel like a better person. Just like Bree. He enjoyed his time with the two of them. Getting more out of a simple baking session than he had in the boardroom in a long time.

If ever.

Maybe some of his brother’s surprising happiness was starting to rub off on him.

And maybe this has more to do with Bree than you care to admit?

‘This is Bree in the bakery,’ Becca was saying, waving a hand at the picture before her
