It doesn't have a face or answer to its name, but this robot sure works hard!
But Where's the Rest of It?
A lot of working robots are just arms. Yes, just arms. You might imagine a robot having a humanoid body, with a head, arms, and legs, but there is no need for the extra hardware in most manufacturing jobs. So, engineers just build robotic arms to complete the work. Thinking back to the sticker factory, it makes sense that a robot would replace me in that job. How many stickers do you think a robotic arm could place on top of a box in a day? Of course, there would be a lot of factors involved to figure out the answer to this question, like the speed of the robot’s arm and how many boxes the factory produced, but I’d guess that a robotic arm would be 10 to 20 times faster than my own arm at the very least.
It makes sense to automate this job, but that would also mean I’d have to find another one. Some jobs can be done faster and more reliably by robots than humans. So, where does that leave us? What actually separates us from machines?
Robots today have automated lots of jobs and not just in factories. Robots have begun to take over industries that were traditionally human centered. The programs that robots run have become increasingly complex, and so has their hardware. Even industries that we may not have expected to be automated, like law and medicine, have benefitted from the use of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) . AI is the ability for computers to think or learn from the information they’re given.
