What About Other Sources of EMFs?
* * *
If you watch TV or use a computer or a hair dryer, you are exposed to low levels of EMFs. We canât turn back the clock to the days before electricity, and I donât think most of us would want to, but do exercise caution when using EMF-emitting appliances.
Make your bed a safe zone. Reduce your exposure to EMFs while you sleep. Donât sleep with a clock radio or telephone answering machine right next to your head. Move your clock or answering machine to the foot of your bed, or at least three feet away from your head. I donât recommend sleeping with an electric blanket because you are directly exposing yourself to an electrical field for an extended period of time. If you love your electric blanket, use it for a few minutes before you go to sleep to warm up your bed and then unplug it for the night.
TV tips. Donât sit too close to the television. Maintain a distance of about 6 feet between you and the screen.
A safer computer. If you routinely use a computer, use one with a flat screen, which emits far lower levels of EMFs than the old-style screens with a cathode ray tube (CRT). They are somewhat more expensive than the CRT screens but are coming down in price; they are well worth the extra dollars in terms of safety. Whatever type of screen you use, be sure to sit at least 3 feet away.
Hair dryer. If you use a hair dryer, keeping it on the lowest setting will reduce EMF exposure. If you let your hair air dry for a few minutes before using the blow dryer, you will not need to use the hair dryer for as long a period of time.
What about the EMF exposure that you canât control? I personally wouldnât want to live or work in a building near high-tension electric wires or transformers, but if you do, you should be especially careful about exposure to EMFs from other sources, such as a cell phone. As far as Iâm concerned, taking these simple precautions is just good, common-sense âpreventive medicine.â
