Chapter Ten – Anthony

The clinking of the wine glasses around us, the low ambient music, and the sound of chatter from every corner felt peaceful. Almost too peaceful, given what was going on in my head right now, but I had to start somewhere.

I had insisted on getting us out of the house that night. No way was I going to spend the next few days sitting at home, wondering what would happen next, if my father was going to make it, torturing myself with the whys and hows and the whens and —

See, I was at it again. I had booked us a table at an expensive restaurant across town with generous security tailing us, of course, because there was no way I would go out of the house without it after what had happened to my father.

And, if I was being honest, I’d been looking for an excuse to spend more time with Foster. The two of us had shared a lot the last few days, and I wanted to find out just how many more hidden layers she was concealing.

As I pulled out her chair for her, my fingers grazed her back, and I felt that jolt of attraction towards her. I wasn’t exactly sure where we stood with everything going on right now, given that we had been sleeping together the last few days, but we didn’t need to put labels on anything.

Apart from the marriage thing, of course.

"What’s good here?" she asked, smiling at me over the top of the menu.

"Anything," I replied. "I’ve got some favorites, though. You want to get a selection to share?"

"Sounds perfect," she agreed, and I ordered a generous amount of food and the most expensive bottle of wine. Extravagant, sure, but I’d had the sneaking feeling I might not be around to enjoy this money for long. Better to make the most of it now.

We shared our portions, and I was surprised to discover how hungry I was. I had hardly found time to do much more than work out and call the hospital for updates – anything to try and handle the terror in my chest right now. I couldn’t stop thinking about losing my father, and at least being out of the house meant I wasn’t surrounded by reminders of him.

"This food is amazing," she sighed as she took a bite of the fresh bread painted with garlic butter. "Can we come here every night? Or do they do takeout?"

I laughed.

"I don’t think it’s the kind of place that does takeout, but hey, we can try," I teased. "You never came to places like this before?"

"Not for a long time. I was at college right up until my parents reached out to me again. It wasn’t like I had a lot of extra money."

"You were at college?"

"You sound surprised," she laughed, raising her eyebrows at me pointedly. "I don’t strike you as the college type?”

"No, no, it’s not that," I assured. "It’s just...I don’t meet many people who go through all that, you know.
