Chapter Fifteen

Nathan arrived at the offices of the United States Attorney in Dallas just shy of 2 p.m., made his way through security and on up to the fourth floor, where he checked in with a receptionist and then took a seat in the waiting area. It didn’t take long before he was called back to his brother’s office. This was the first time in Nathan’s life that he had ever visited Blake at work, and the fact that he was only really here because he needed something made him feel somewhat awkward. In a better world, they’d have maintained their fraternal bond throughout these years. Nathan would have come to visit, maybe spent a few nights with Blake’s family, hanging out at the house and going to one of the boys’ football games. Was it too late for that, too late to start over? Nathan wasn’t at all sure. One thing that was abundantly clear, however, just walking down the hallway with his escort, was how different he and Blake had grown to be. To Nathan, just the idea of working in an environment like this was soul-crushing. Year after year, he knew that Blake would come to this place every single day, breathing the same stale air and storing his sandwiches in some office refrigerator to be eaten at his desk. Nathan needed to be out in the world, soaking it in with all of his senses. Blake was the cerebral type, able to exist entirely inside his own head. Perhaps those differences were partially what came between them? Nathan doubted he’d ever really know, but right now what he needed more urgently was not some sort of rapprochement, it was information on a man named Otto Klaus.

“Hi, Nathan, come in,” Blake waved his younger brother through the door.

“Thank you,” Nathan said to his escort, who headed back up the hall as Nathan moved inside. Blake’s was a typical lawyer’s office, or at least what Nathan assumed one to be. Not a fancy corporate office, though, far from it. This was government issue all the way, from the sturdy yet functional steel desk, to the plain wooden shelves filled with law books, to the beige blinds hanging in front of the windows. Blake would have made a whole lot more money with a private sector job, Nathan was reminded, but his brother had his own reasons for putting in the hours for Uncle Sam. Perhaps that was something they actually did have in common: the desire to serve. Nathan certainly had to respect that. “How are you, bro? It’s great to see you.”

Blake wore a white-collared shirt with a blue tie and navy-blue slacks. A matching suit jacket hung from a hanger on a stand in one corner. He stood and offered a hand, but instead of shaking it, Nathan embraced his brother in a bear hug.

“It’s been too long,” said Nathan as he let his brother go.

“A long time, indeed. Please, take a seat,” Blake directed him toward one of two empty chairs on Nathan’s side of the desk.
