Elizabeth was pleased that none of her sisters were present as Aunt Beatrice proceeded to berate her about her lack of manners and selfishness, leaving the home without a word.

Elizabeth did not try and argue, but stood fidgeting, moving nervously from one foot to another until Mrs Knatchbull told her sharply to “Keep still.”

“There are five of you to watch and I expect you and Jane to set an example to your sisters,” she said. “What sort of example are you setting by disappearing like that?”

Elizabeth could not excuse what she had done. She had a feeling that her aunt would not be interested in her feelings about the sea.

Mrs Knatchbull was still berating her when Jane appeared.

“Lizzy, have you been out?” she said. “Why did you not wake me? I would have accompanied you.”

There was an awkward silence.

Jane looked at them both. “Did I say something wrong?”

Mrs. Knatchbull sniffed. “Jane, I hope that you and your sister are not going to make a habit of wandering alone without my knowledge or agreement. You do not know Hastings. This is a disappointing start, but I will say no more.”

“We will remember.”

Mrs. Knatchbull gave them an encouraging smile. “I shall go to speak to Mrs. Tripplehorn about breakfast. She is unused to having to feed so many of you.”

Jane waited until they were alone before she spoke. “Lizzy, I am sorry. I did not think she would be so cross, or I would not have spoken.”

“Do not worry, Jane. I should not have left, but I yearned to be outside.”

Jane smiled sympathetically. “You are going to miss the lanes of Longbourn.”

“I am, but I think there will be a lot of places to enjoy a walk here, if we are allowed to do so.”

“It is going to very different, isn’t it?” said Jane looking out the window.

Elizabeth was rather afraid it was. She suspected their aunt was unlikely to afford them the same sort of freedom that they had been used to in Hertfordshire.
