Chapter Twenty – Kay

“You think we were attacked by bears?” Kay wasn’t expecting this to be Warren’s first admission.

“You must have seen it.” Warren leaned forward to look for Curtis. “Where is that man?”

“He’s coming right now,” Kay assured him and a moment later Curtis opened the truck door and climbed inside.

“Warren thinks we were attacked by bears,” Kay blurted out and earned herself a wide-eyed, disapproving look from Warren.

“Bears?” Curtis snorted. “It sounds as if you are suffering from dehydration and hypothermia. Maybe we should get you to the hospital.”

“No.” Warren put his hands out in front of him.

“Really. You might have a concussion, too, looking at the cut on your head.” Curtis started the engine. “The hospital is the best place for you.”

“Okay, I’ll go to the hospital but first, we need to get back to the lodge and grab our stuff. I’ll drive us to the hospital.” He nodded, pleased with his plan. “I thought this place was safe but it’s not. We should move on.”

“I don’t think you are in a fit state to drive. And Curtis is right. We should get you to a hospital.” Kay glanced at Curtis behind Warren’s back as he leaned forward and put his head in his hands. “I mean bears. Whoever heard of such a crazy thing?”

“I thought that was what you were going to tell me.” Warren raised his head from his hands and looked at Kay.

“Do you know how crazy that sounds?” Curtis asked. “Next, you’ll be telling us that the bear that followed you over the mountain last night was specifically hunting you. For what you did.”

The tarp rustled as Warren slowly turned his head to look at Curtis. “What do you mean?”

“Warren, I know you must be worried about what Tony is going to do to you since you completely failed your mission last night. But if you’re going to blame it on sentient bears, he’s not going to believe you.” Kay patted Warren on the back. “I believe that a bear is going to be the least of your problems. Don’t you?”

“Or maybe it was Tony who sent the bears.” Curtis waggled his finger at Warren. “Maybe he figured you would just be collateral damage.”

“What?” Warren rubbed his head as if he had a headache coming. “So now you believe me about the bears?”

“Hell, no. I think you are crazy, and you should see a doctor.” Curtis chuckled. “Now I get it. You want to get locked up in a secure institution because that’s the only way you’re going to avoid the wrath of Tony Mandell.”

“What do you even know about Tony?” Warren slapped Curtis on the arm and instantly regretted it.

“Oh, I know more than you think. I know the kind of man Tony is and he won’t forgive this. He won’t pat you on the back and say don’t worry, Warren, it’s okay that you fucked up.” Curtis’s eyes burned bright as he turned his full focus on Warren. “You, my friend, are finished.
