THE WILFUL PRINCESS

One more day had passed and Sarvani felt her strength returning, her wound almost healed. While her body felt nourished by the healthy meals the warrior prepared for her, it was her mind which had become resilient, all because of the affection shown by Vikrama. He was at her side, all the time, encouraging her to rebuild her strength.

“Good morning, Princess.” Vikramasimha greeted Sarvani with a broad smile on his face. He was in a better temperament as the princess did not trouble him all that much. Her fever was fully gone and she was in a better frame of mind after a swim in the pool the earlier day, before the sun set. He believed that she was more at peace also because she ate well, now that her body was on the road to recovery.

“Good morning, Vikrama,” she responded, soft colour blooming on her cheeks as she gave him a bold glance, admiring his tall figure which was encased in breeches and tunic, unlike the number of times she had had the opportunity to see his bare body, once even without his breeches.

“Do you need help?” he asked the moment she got up from the make shift bed.

Sarvani tested her legs and found them to be steady. Slowly shaking her head, she answered, “I think I can manage.”

“I will still come along with you,” he offered.

She gave a nod as she walked towards the back of the cave, a smile on her face when she noticed the sun rays winking on the water. Both the horses were on the opposite bank, lazily swatting the flies with their thick tails, enjoying the warmth of the sun. Turning to him, she said, “I think you should go. I’ll be able to manage.”

“Are you sure? Do you know how to swim?” he asked, just in case. The earlier evening, he had held her hand while she had floated at the edge of the pool where the water came to the height of her knees.

“Actually, I do. And I am stronger today.”

“Alright. I will be back if you do not return within fifteen minutes.”

“Half an hour,” she insisted, fixing him with her sharp blue-green gaze.

He smiled when he saw the way her eyes shone, the lack lustre shade he had noticed soon after her injury, having disappeared completely. “Alright.” He left her alone with a wave of his hand.

He looked up twenty minutes later to see her walking inside the cave, shivering under the cover of her thin uttariya. “Did you not take a towel?” he asked, going to his saddle bag, and returning with one in his hand. His eyes took in her beautiful shape, finding it difficult to move his gaze away.

“Obviously not,” she muttered, taking the towel from his hand, and staring at him pointedly. When he did not move, she ordered, “Go away, Vikrama. I need some privacy to get dressed.”

He gave a nod, his face having gone rigid even as he studied her luscious body through the thin, and now damp material of her uttariya.
