Chapter 9

Had Captain Derville Gunther been a real man, a real marine, he would have elected to terminate his own life with the armory drawn Beretta M9 pistol before he nearly emptied his family’s savings reserve in the form of a cashier’s check payable to Desmond Bank’s alias, Robert Steed. Actually, had he been a real man, a real marine, he wouldn’t have gotten in to that situation in the first place. Certainly he would have handled it differently.

It didn’t take much time at all to unload the Impala for an extra grand in straight cash. The value of the stereo and hydraulics alone were worth three times that. And it even came complete with a body disposal service. Nobody’s going to care about a damn gang banger floating in the harbor in a suitcase, even if it does wash ashore. One less to deal with. As long as they stick with killing their own, it’s all good.

A critically important line had been crossed, and it wasn't the physical line, either. Ella had blood on her hands. Was the killing in self defense? Sure. It's how it was handled that is important. On one hand, the complexity constituted a setback. On the other hand, it was starting to morph into an opportunity. She could become an asset.

The dynamics changed. The plan changed. Banks now had help. Female help. He didn’t have to transport and store Ellison alone. That’s huge. It’s the little things, like running in to the store, buying gas, running to the shitter. Much like if you’re an adult with a small child, you just aren’t as free to do small things (and big things) if you have to do it all by yourself.

The whole discussion on how money would be divided up between Banks and Ella didn’t even come up in discussion. Banks wouldn’t allow it to be an item of discussion. His deal was simple. Stay with him, team with him, and she gets food and shelter, whatever form the shelter may be at the time. In exchange, he doesn’t turn her in to the cops over the whole Dervish Gunther thing. The fallout from that could get nasty. And it could quite possibly terminate with Salvador and his floating suitcase boat. It don’t look good, it don’t look good.

At any rate, staying at the motel was now officially a no-go. The bloody carpet in Ella’s room would attract crime scene investigators if discovered. To that end, Banks and Ella physically removed it and took it to a remote dumpster that night before confronting Derville. Of course the maid reported it in the morning, and the charge to replace it was hefty, but in all, the take over the last couple of days was huge. Ella was evicted anyway over the carpet.

The new ‘home’ per se, was a run-down tenement hotel that catered mostly to homeless and drug addicts with just enough money to afford a run-down tenement hotel room, for a while. Then the solution began to gel.
