CHAPTER SEVEN

SHE WAS EVERYTHING he had imagined and more. They were.

He had woken to her ass spooned into his lap and they’d made love that way, with her breast in his palm and her delicate shivers of release milking his. It had been exquisite.

Now she was being adorably shy, blushing bright red when he said, “Let the maid pack for you. Surely you’re as hungry for breakfast as I am?”

She gave up on her attempt to arrange her new cosmetics in the too-small case she’d brought. “Do you have the necklace?”

“Yes. It’s safe. I reserved a table on the rooftop terrace, since we don’t have time to see the city this trip.”

“That was thoughtful. Thank you.” She dropped her two phones into her bag, along with a lipstick and the pill dispenser he’d noticed she used for her prenatal vitamins.

“How do you feel?” he asked when they were alone in the elevator.

She gave him another admonishing look. “Yes, Mr. Smug. I’ve worked up an appetite.”

“I meant... No adverse effects from our activities?”

“You make it sound like we went rock climbing or some other high-risk hobby.”

“I’ve never had time for hobbies, but I see the appeal now. I’ll start making time.”

She giggled and flashed him a knowing look that was loaded with enough sinful speculation to have him wondering if they would have time to use the bed once more before they left the hotel.

“You didn’t answer my question,” he pointed out as the elevator let them out.

“I’m fine. Thank you,” she said pertly.

Good. Because one night would not be enough. That certainty was crystalizing inside him. He wanted more from her. More time, more commitment. More of her.

Did he want her as his wife, though?

He considered that question while they enjoyed a pleasant, leisurely breakfast, intermittently speaking with a few guests from last night who were also staying in the hotel.

Molly was wrong to think she didn’t fit in his world. People were curious about her, but much of it was around him and his history of being jilted. They wanted to gauge whether she was in it for the long haul. She didn’t talk much about herself, though. She was naturally empathetic and curious and listened intently, which built trust and charmed everyone very quickly.

As they were finishing up, Travis texted to say they were on the way to meet them so they could drive to the helipad together.

“He sent me Imogen’s contact details. Do you want that to go to your work phone or personal?”

“Personal.” She had glanced over her work emails while they’d eaten, but now brought out the other phone.

It pinged with the text he sent her and she opened it to check it, then gave a few swipes as though checking for other messages. Her expression shadowed with dismay.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She gave him an overbright smile. “I want to take a couple of photos for Mom.”

She rose and moved to the rail while he signed their meal to the room, but he couldn’t help wondering if she’d been hoping for communication from the baby’s father.
