CUTS AND COALS

“How long do you think she’ll sleep for?”

Kit spoke to Maggie.

“You didn’t tell her everything about that lotus flower,” he continued, chuckling lightly. “I still remember the last time you gave me a dose of that tea, after that debacle with Li… I must have slept for a week!”

Maggie joined Kit in his reminiscing. She laughed also, and then calmed herself before taking a sip of her drink. The two had retired to Maggie’s study after Alaeder had escorted their precious Aurora to bed.

“Oh, stop that,” Maggie told Kit, lowering her glass from her lips and resting it in her lap. “That was different. You were an absolute mess. Dylan probably only has a day or two of sleep to catch up on. She’ll thank me when she wakes up.”

She paused before adding: “You’re sure you don’t want a drink? It’s just us adults now.” She held her own glass up into the air and rattled it enticingly as she spoke.

Kit shook his head. His nostrils were tingling. He could smell the delicious earthy aroma emanating from Maggie’s scotch glass, even over the burning smell of the flaming coals in the fireplace. It was tempting for sure.

“You know I can’t,” he answered finally.

“Suit yourself,” Maggie replied. “But one day, you’ll see that this ‘diet’ of yours is just ridiculous. There’s nothing wrong with you, Kitten. You’re perfect. Just the way you are.”

She lifted her glass to her lips and swallowed the rest of her drink in one refreshing gulp.

Kit didn’t say anything more. He was feeling a bit uncomfortable in his regal velvet armchair, and so he readjusted himself. He sat forward, resting his forearms in his lap, and stared deeper into the flames flickering under the mantelpiece.

The smell of Maggie’s antique scotch had all but disappeared into her stomach now, and thus freed up Kit’s senses. The taunting aroma now dissipated, he retreated once more into his thoughts.

Dylan.

No matter how hard Kit tried to focus on other things, he always came back to her. And try as he did, he couldn’t quite understand why.

“You care for her, don’t you?”

Maggie seemed to have read his thoughts. She always could read him like an open book, he thought. Kit didn’t answer her, and instead, chose to remain tight-lipped.

Sensing his hesitation, Maggie didn’t push him. She merely readjusted herself in her armchair, and went on.

“It’s hot in here, yes?” she asked. “Perhaps the fire was too much?”

Her skin did appear a bit flushed under the heat of the flames. Kit watched in silence, as she slowly held her hands up to her head, gently ran her fingers along the back of her neck, up the bottom of her scalp and in under her gorgeous reddish-blonde hair. She fiddled with something at the back of her scalp, and a moment later, all of her hair came sweeping off of her head in one fell swoosh.

“That’s much better,” Maggie sighed, examining the bright red wig of hair in her hand.
