Within half an hour they were in Victor’s Morris Oxford heading into central London. He’d been relieved to find that his father hadn’t sold the motor during his absence, and it was well polished, with a full tank of petrol.

‘Sorry,’ he said, squeezing Maurice’s hand. ‘The parents aren’t easy at the best of times but that was particularly bloody. If I’d realised it would be that bad, I’d never have put you through the ordeal. But I genuinely thought they’d be pleased to see me and would have saved all their vitriol until an occasion when a guest wasn’t present. I suppose all the time I’ve been away I’d forgotten how appalling my own parents could be.’

‘No apologies needed. We’re not our parents.’ Maurice smiled at Victor and placed his hand on his knee.

It was like a bolt of electricity. Victor gave a sigh from deep inside. ‘Let’s skip lunch,’ he said, his voice throaty with desire. ‘Can you wait to eat tonight instead?’

‘There’s nothing I’d like more.’
