9 From a spiritual perspective, mindfulness is a stepping-stone to the Divine. Before responding to anything, Gautama Buddha taught his followers to be mindful; to be aware, and witness clearly, without bias.

PART II

Living Àyurveda

Over the ages, and today, people have offered many different principles and beliefs to help us fathom personal and worldly meaning, and improve our health and well-being. But ideas and information remain concepts only and are of no practical value unless they are practiced and lived. True understanding and benefit come when applicable knowledge is consolidated through personal first-hand experience.

Āyurveda is not a set of rigid rules. It is a living science and wisdom; a path where each individual can fully involve themselves in healing imbalance that afflicts them, and maintaining robust health. Along the path of self-healing, Āyurveda encourages people to seek expert advice, then consolidate understanding through personal observation, awareness, and experience. In this way, theory informs and regulates practice, and practice informs and expands how we relate to theory. Personal application brings information and discourse to life. The Indian traditions of Āyurveda, yoga, and Tantra have always flowed between the twin shores of theory and practice.

Today it’s possible to take little personal responsibility for the foods we eat. But from an Ayurvedic perspective, eating and food choice shouldn’t be influenced by cherry-picked scientific studies, big corporations, or what’s at arm’s length in the store. Eating is ultimately a personal affair that takes a little time and commitment. By paying attention to foods, to the eating experience, and to food’s effects, we can better understand their qualities and whether they suit us or not. We may hear about mangoes all our life, but until we smell its fragrant aroma and experience its complex sweet-sour taste and dense, juicy flesh in the body, and its heating effects if we eat too many, we never really know mango. Taking responsibility for our choices means we may sometimes not get it right. Yet through experience, doubt is removed, and faith in our capability grows.

Part II: Living Āyurveda is about putting the principles of Ayurvedic nutrition discussed in Part I into practice. Only then can we consolidate helpful knowledge, and truly reap the rewards. Holistic approaches understand that change in one area is connected to, and affects everything else. With this in mind, undertaking change in any area can help to balance the whole. But perhaps the best place to start, the most fundamental, is to reconnect with Mother Nature, the divine principle of material creation, of which we are part.
