Chapter 30

IN THE WEEKS THAT FOLLOW, we settle into our routine. We head out on supply runs twice a week—Dean coming with us on Tuesdays and Aaron on Sundays. Although I’m initially apprehensive after what happened on the first two expeditions, the following supply runs are uneventful. And eventually I find myself looking forward to them, knowing I get to spend the day with Ethan as well as Dean or Aaron. After so many months living in each other’s pockets at the bunker, it’s been hard not having them around all the time and I’ve been missing their company.

On the days when we don’t head out on supply runs, we return to our regular jobs. I go on house calls with Kiri and deal with patients at the clinic, and once a week we visit the kids at the school. I’ve grown to like Kiri a lot. She’s kind and wise and pragmatic. And although I think she would keep our immunity a secret, we’ve agreed we can’t risk her finding out ... not yet, maybe not ever. So we’ve kept up the façade about Dean’s diabetes. She seems to believe our story and has tasked me with monitoring his blood sugar levels at home so he doesn’t have to come into the clinic, and we’re also allowed to keep a supply of insulin at the house. Insulin has also been added to the list of medications we need to look for when we head out on medical supply runs. So far, no one seems to suspect anything and no more questions have been asked about the vial or the reactants we were carrying.
