The rideshare dropped them off in front of the Science Museum. Simon gazed east at the gray Charles River and felt the bracing chill deep in his lungs. Autumn had been his favorite season a lifetime ago, but over the past decade it had lost that magic. For the last few years the crisp air, low sun, and changing landscape reminded him of loss. An old feeling—of hope, discovery, and possibility—surprised him.

“What’s on your mind?” she asked, bundled up against the chill.

He wanted to tell her that only months ago he wanted to end his life, but now that he’d met her, he felt hope. “I love the fall,” he replied instead.

“Yes. I love sweater weather.” She tucked her face in her scarf, hiding from the wind. “I wish winter would never come.”

When it does, he thought, I wonder where you will be.

“Thanks for coming with me, Simon.” When she was happy, her eyes smiled first. For a fleeting moment, he wished the world would stop, hoped to remember this moment of happiness for a day, not too far off, when he’d walk away and get on with his life. The thought made him empty.

“It will be a series of great exhibits,” she said, flashing the grin she reserved for her jokes. “Get it? Series?”

Simon groaned. Today, at least, would be a wonderful day.

The museum staff had set up a small group of chairs inside the Mathematica exhibit for the show. The presentation was fascinating: a broad discussion of how ancient concepts in mathematics had impacted discoveries in the twenty-first century. Simon was astonished to learn that probability had a role in cell phone technology, and work on prime numbers in the 1600s had impacted the field of cryptography. Kelly went up to the host after the presentation to ask a few questions.

The host recognized her immediately and ended up asking her for an autograph and a selfie. He turned out to be a fanboy of her show and was tickled to meet someone who had such an impact on making math accessible to the public. So were several other people, who came up to her to shake her hand, ask for autographs, and ask her about life after her show.

Simon was concerned with so many people coming up to her. He could not read them with Kelly close by, but soon realized she was in no danger. The smiles on everyone who came up to her proved the tremendous impact she’d had on people, an impact deeper than he’d imagined. He was amazed how she could be so gracious and kind to complete strangers. She never became tired or irritated and made everyone feel important and special. It was noticeable in class and impressive when she did it in public.

“Excuse me?” A teenage girl tapped on Kelly’s shoulder as the crowd dispersed. “Are you Doctor Kelly Austin?”

“I am.” Kelly had been uncomfortable being the center of attention mere minutes ago. Her smile and body language completely changed with the young girl.
