As Apollo 11’s launch approached, Dee O’Hara, the astronauts’ nurse, chatted with Armstrong. “You will not believe the number of people that have congregated down here,” she said. “The causeways are jammed. They’ve been out there for a week. It’s just this mass of people.”

“Well, yeah, I suppose people are going to make a big deal out of this,” he laughed.

O’Hara was startled. “Neil, do you realize what you’ve just said?”

“Yes, it’s no big deal.” he replied.

“Well, maybe not to you,” O’Hara replied, “but it certainly is to the rest of us.”

The astronauts spent their final day on Earth relaxing at a beach cottage south of the launchpad. Buzz Aldrin searched for coins and other treasures in the sand with a metal detector.

And then it was July 16: launch day. The crew ate breakfast, had brief medical exams, and got into their space suits. Their pockets held pencils, flashlights, handkerchiefs, and scissors to cut wire. Armstrong also stashed a comb and a packet of candy.
