Self-talk is a stream of messages we send ourselves all the time. We become so familiar with the sound of our own internal voice that we sometimes don’t even recognize it as a voice anymore. But the way we talk to ourselves matters tremendously. Our inner voice impacts the atmosphere in our minds, how we view ourselves, and how we perceive the world around us. Anxiety occurs when our inner critic turns up the volume. Some of us were born with a critical inner voice; others experience a slow shift over time or our inner critic comes out during seasons of stress. The good news is, it’s possible to take charge of the narrative for positive change.
