By nature, Pyro was a forgetful person.

It wasn’t unusual for him to leave home without his lunch. Or his shoes. Once Pyro had even left his tower wearing pajamas and holding his pillow like a backpack.

But accidentally leaving one of his friends to the mercy of his country’s most dangerous sworn enemy?

That set a new record, even for him.

Danette and Maggs had both frozen, staring at the trapdoor above them in transfixed horror. “We have to go back for him!” Maggs exclaimed, reaching for the dangling rope ladder.

“Wait,” Danette said, pulling him back. “Maggs, you can’t.”

“We can’t just leave him there!” Maggs fired back at her.

A tiny squeak suddenly piped up from his pocket and almost immediately a white mouse peeked over the hem of Maggs’s pants, scampering down his leg and onto the ground. With every tiny step he took, the mouse grew larger and larger until he was the cream-colored wildcat Pyro was starting to get used to seeing around. “Skylight!” Danette cried. But Skylight only had eyes for Maggs, snarling ferociously as he bounded in front of the ladder with one paw thrashing at the already tangled rope.

Pyro really didn’t want to get on Maggs’s bad side, but he was even more afraid of getting on Skylight’s bad side. Plus, the shapeshifter was right. “Maggs,” he said, leaping in front of the crazed redhead. “I think you know what Skylight’s trying to say. We barely escaped the Darvonians! They’ll snap us like scrawny twigs if we try to rescue Kean.”

Danette gently placed her hand on Maggs’s shoulder. “The Darvonians won’t hurt him.”

He shook her off, bright blue eyes flashing. “You don’t know that!” Maggs’s gaze quickly softened when he saw Danette’s stricken face. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled. It’s just … Kean is family. And right now, he’s the only family I have.”

Pyro felt awkward, not knowing how to comfort the guy. Danette had always been the one to know if someone needed a hug or just some time alone. Unfortunately, Pyro did not possess the same intuition. It had to be a girl thing.

Feeling a bit awkward, he tapped Maggs on the shoulder. “I’m really sorry, man. But I promise you, we’re going to get him back. I’ll do everything I can to rescue Kean, I promise.”

Maggs managed a humorless laugh. “That’s a hard thing to promise.”

“Hey, did you see me bash that crazy Darvonian lady?” Pyro chuckled. “I eat hard things for breakfast.”

Danette nudged Maggs in the shoulder, grinning. “Same here. With Pyro shooting fireballs and me falling from the sky and knocking people out at random, there’s no way we can’t succeed.”

Pyro flashed Danette a bright grin. “You are pretty good at that.”

Seeing that Maggs had changed his mind, Skylight softly padded away from the ladder to nuzzle against his leg with large blue apologetic eyes. Maggs laughed, rubbing the skeilsho’s head. “Thanks for watching my back, buddy.” Taking a deep breath, he then fixed his eyes on the tunnel ahead. “You’re right, guys.
