3) Many times in a recording session I will come up with ideas, or want to help singers or musicians focus on things that can make their parts sound ‘better’ (better is of course only MY opinion at first until the band also agrees with me). Now this could be anything from wanting a singer to sing the last chorus again for pitch reasons, or suggesting a new bassline for the bass player in a breakdown section, it ALL has to do with the spirit and attitude in which I ask questions or make a suggestion. In offering suggestions, or presenting ideas to a band, one can assume the posture of an authority figure who has a ‘gold record’ on his wall and years of experience, and speak down to an artist like a teacher might to his student who ‘failed’ to hit the high note, or handed in an inferior bassline! To be honest, all over the world I hear from musicians (and had the same experience myself, as an artist working with a producer) that producers and engineers really DO often act this way. In fact I would go as far as to say that many producers and engineers take out their own musical frustrations and impatience on younger musicians as some form of control and dominance! Many producers also try to then rely on technology and massive editing to make up for what was lost in the „brilliance and inspiration“ part of the music. Often the music and singing suffer exactly becuase of the producer‘s oppressive, unfriendly and authoritarian stance.
I will just say this: When a singer does a loud scream, and it just doesn‘t quite go as planned, there is a way you can tell the singer you want him/her to try again that will absolutely cripple them, and make them run out of the studio in tears (truly!), maybe too scared to ever try that part again, and there is a way to ask the same thing in a way that the singer will be MORE THAN HAPPY to try again right away and he or she will be encouraged to sing/scream that part better than you or even they ever DREAMED of.
This is the precisely the essence of the goals I have for myself as a producer- to help the musical artists that trust and hire me, by aiming to give them a very memorable and exciting recording experience, and have their songs emerge from the studio better than they ever imagined!
