Chapter Eighteen
MATROS
The teleportation light dimmed, and we returned to the medical laboratory. My mate was in my arms fighting his sleep. A simulacrum of James, the first Omega awaited us both.
I yelled, âRemove these collars now!â
I explained what happened and handed over the recording from our collars. A thought on how I should return and kill the human lingered in my mind.
Later, I will âsuggestâ changes to the security collars and visitation protocols. For now, I stood and kept Peter in my sight.
The simulacrum turned to my mate. âWe meet again.â He pressed several keys on the holographic keyboard.
âIt itches,â said Peter. âWow⦠itâs like falling asleep in reverse, but not like waking up.â
The âJamesâ shook his head. âYou are a great deal of trouble. Most do not fight this much.â
âWhat about you?â Asked Peter.
âOh, the real James embraced it. He⦠was a little hesitant at first but now heâs got a full family.â He grinned softly, âThere are worse things than a Volardiâs love. If youâre really lucky, you get two.â
âI uh⦠think Iâm lucky,â he said, âbut one is enough for now.â
The seriousness within the simulacrumâs blue eyes returned. âHow do you feel?â
âBetter. The fog in my brain is gone.â
Strange creatures with their language. The implant translated the words and overall meaning. Yet I fear he would always be a puzzle but not an unpleasant one.
The simulacrum turned toward me and held up a white medical orb. âShall I remove the chemicals from you as well?â
My mateâs forehead scrunched. âHe didnât swallow sleeping pills.â
âNo,â said the simulacrum. âHowever, he is on suppressants.â
My shoulders rose. âI will explain.â I turned to the doctor. âNo more, shall I take them. They will run out within a day.â
âWhat kind of suppressants?â Asked Peter.
âJamesâ spoke. âTo reduce the connection.â
My voice drew out. âThere are⦠indications you were coerced. I didnât want more pressureâ¦â
âYou were willing to lose me even though you didnât want to?â
I held my hand out, and he gripped it tight â almost as if he was afraid of letting go. Perhaps there are questions to ask, but for now, I wanted to be with my new mate.
