As you become more aware of yourself in different situations, like taking the milk from the fridge or picking up the post in the morning, you will begin to notice a change in the way that you move. Everyday activities become much easier, which of course will be reflected in your attitude to life in general.

PICK UP A BOOK
1Place a book on the ground in front of you.
2Without thinking, pick the book up in your normal way (in other words, in the way which feels most comfortable to you).
3Repeat several times.
4Try to notice how you bend down. Do you bend only from the pelvis or do you use your ankle, knee and hip joints simultaneously? If you are bending your knees, how much are you bending them?
5Try squatting. If you find this hard, just see how far down you can go. Do not force yourself to do more than you can manage. You may need to steady yourself at first by holding on to a nearby chair or table.
It may be useful to re-read Chapter 4 (Inhibition) and Chapter 5 (Directions) and repeat this exercise.
